SONY UNVEILS A NEW PS5 MODEL WITH A DETACHABLE DISC DRIVE

Sony has officially introduced an upcoming PS5 model, often referred to as the “PS5 Slim.” This new iteration stands out with its removable disc drive and expanded internal storage of 1TB. It is designed to be more compact, both slimmer and shorter than its predecessors, and is set to replace both the existing PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition.

In the United States, the new PS5 model will be available for $499.99, including the disc drive, while the PS5 Digital Edition is priced at $449.99. Sony has managed to significantly reduce the volume of the console by over 30 percent and has also achieved a 24 percent reduction in weight, contingent on the specific model chosen. This reduction is facilitated by a removable disc drive, creating an added degree of flexibility for users.

To enhance the aesthetics, there are four distinct cover panels: a glossy top portion and a matte bottom section. Notably, if you opt for the base PS5 Digital Edition, you have the option to purchase the Blu-ray disc drive separately for $79.99 (or €119.99 / £99.99).

Enhancements are visible in the form of dual USB-C ports at the front, replacing the single USB-C and USB-A ports featured in the previous PS5 model. Sony will include a horizontal stand with the new PS5, while an optional vertical stand, compatible with all PS5 models, can be purchased for $29.99 (or €29.99 / £24.99).

Both models of the new PS5 now boast 1TB of storage, a step up from the previous 825GB. The US release of this model is scheduled for November, initially available at select retailers and Sony’s PlayStation direct site. It will be priced at $449.99 without a disc drive or $499.99 with one. The rollout will continue worldwide in the subsequent months, and once the current PS5 inventory is depleted, the new model will become the sole offering.

In Europe, the pricing for the Digital Edition is set at €449.99, while the model with the disc drive will retail for €549.99. In the UK, you can expect to pay £479.99 for the drive-inclusive version or £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.

Sony’s official announcement regarding this upgraded PS5 model comes after months of leaks and previous reports indicating the company’s plans to introduce a PS5 with a removable drive. Additionally, Sony recently concluded its inaugural PS5 sale, featuring substantial price reductions in the UK, Germany, India, and other regions.
