“Witcher 3” Game Achieves Impressive Sales Milestone of Over 50 Million Copies, Company Reveals—Approaching the Sales Figures of Other Best-Selling Titles
CD Projekt, the company behind the highly acclaimed video game “Witcher 3,” announced that the game has surpassed the remarkable milestone of selling over 50 million copies. This achievement brings it closer to the sales numbers of other top-selling games in the industry.
The success of “Witcher 3” has solidified its position as one of the most popular and beloved games of recent times. With its immersive world, captivating storyline, and engaging gameplay, it has garnered a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim. As it continues to attract new players and maintain a strong presence in the gaming community, the game’s sales figures are steadily approaching the levels achieved by other blockbuster titles.
CD Projekt Red, a Polish video game developer, announced in its latest earnings report on Monday that “The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt” has surpassed an impressive milestone of over 50 million copies sold since its release in 2015. This remarkable achievement further solidifies the game’s status as one of the best-selling video games of all time.
Based on company data, CD Projekt Red revealed in its recent earnings report that “The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt” is closing in on other highly successful games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe. These titles had already surpassed the 50 million mark in sales as reported by their respective developers last year.
While “The Witcher 3” continues to achieve impressive sales figures, it still trails behind legendary titles like Tetris, which holds the title of the best-selling video game of all time with over 520 million copies sold since its launch, according to The Tetris Company. Minecraft follows closely with more than 238 million copies sold, and Grand Theft Auto V has amassed over 170 million copies sold.
In the first quarter, CD Projekt Red reported a 19% year-over-year decline in revenues amounting to $41.4 million. However, the company saw a slight increase in net profit to $16.8 million during the same period. CEO Adam Kicinski addressed recent rumors during a conference call, stating that CD Projekt Red will not be acquired by Sony.
CD Projekt Red, founded in 2002 and currently employing over 1,000 individuals across eight countries, is renowned for its Witcher video game series based on a book series of the same name. The series, which started in 2007, has sold tens of millions of copies and has even been adapted into a Netflix series. “The Witcher” stands as the company’s best-selling game, surpassing the sales of Cyberpunk 2077, which has sold over 20 million copies. Despite the initial challenges faced by Cyberpunk 2077’s release in 2020, CD Projekt Red has worked on improving the game through patches, leading to a successful turnaround and contributing to the company’s second-highest revenue year ever in 2022.
Looking ahead, CD Projekt Red has plans to release a new Witcher trilogy and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, although specific development timelines have not yet been shared. Overall, the Witcher video game series has sold over 75 million copies, solidifying its place as a highly successful franchise.
