Redfall’s Physical Version is a Download Code Instead of a Disc

ONLY THE XBOX STANDARD EDITION WILL COME WITH A PHYSICAL DISC.

It appears that a download code for Redfall will be included in place of a disc in the physical edition.

The Xbox Play Anywhere ticket for Redfall may be used to play the game on both the Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Xbox App on PC, according to the game’s page on the Bethesda Support website, which was spotted by a ResetEra user.

While some special editions of contemporary first-party games have used download codes, big releases like 2022’s God of War Ragnarok are one such example, it’s unusual for Xbox games to come with simply a code.

For the Nintendo Switch, this is a more typical practice, but third parties rather than Nintendo use it more frequently.

The information comes after it was established that an online connection will be required for playing the Arkane game, even in single-player mode.

As a result, if the Xbox servers were to go down, as they did in the summer of 2022, it would be impossible to play the game, raising the possibility that it would become entirely unusable in the future.

Even in games that are primarily focused on co-op but also feature single-player modes, persistent online requirements for modern games with single-player modes are still relatively uncommon. This is because many modern games still use DRM, which only requires a single online check to prevent piracy.

Xbox has a history of highlighting the value of game preservation, most notably with its robust backwards compatibility program. However, the company made a notable U-turn on Xbox One’s plans to need an online connection, which were wildly controversial.
