The Witcher 4 Enters Production Phase: CD Projekt Red Aims for a Robust Team and Lessons Learned from Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red is gearing up for the production phase of The Witcher 4, as revealed in a recent article by Ali Jones on GamesRadar. Scheduled to commence in 2024, the game, codenamed Polaris, is set to involve a substantial team of around 400 developers by mid-year.

While the official title for The Witcher 4 has not been announced, CD Projekt Red confirmed the existence of the project in October 2022. The report indicates a shift in focus, with more developers transitioning from Cyberpunk 2077 to contribute to The Witcher 4.

Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski discussed the studio’s exploration of AI in the development process, emphasizing that any AI implementation is likely to remain behind the scenes and not be visible to players. The studio appears to be incorporating lessons learned from the challenges encountered during the release of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020.

The Witcher 4 is positioned as the inaugural installment in a new trilogy, part of CD Projekt Red’s broader plans that include multiple Witcher spin-offs and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. While no specific release date has been confirmed for The Witcher 4, the studio has outlined a timeline where the subsequent two games in the trilogy will launch within six years of the first. The developers aim to make The Witcher 4 accessible as a starting point for players, even if they haven’t played The Witcher 3.
