An Unfortunate Dive into Superhero Schlock
‘Madame Web’ swings into the superhero scene with a promise of female empowerment and unique storytelling. Can Dakota Johnson and Sydneey Sweeney convince you to see this female lead, Sony Pictures disaster, or is your Spider-Sense telling you that something just doesn’t add up?

Sony strikes out again with their latest attempt to build a Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU as they call it on Reddit). Delivering a messy narrative that fails to captivate. Led by a lackluster performance by Dakota Johnson as Cassandra (Soon be Madame) Webb, the movie struggles to weave a compelling superhero tale, leaving you with a sense of “WTF” did I just watch? Of what I can say positive, ‘Madame Web’ introduces a cast of characters, with standout performances from Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon.
The plot revolves around another forgettable villain’s quest for a mysterious spider, leading to his pursuit of future Spider-People who he had a bad dream about. Despite the potential of the premise, the movie fails to maintain engagement, or make any sense with a poorly executed character growth moment that feels forced and unearned. That moment definitely stood out, just for all the wrong reasons.
This movie harkens back to the superhero days of the early 2000’s. But not because they are good like Spider-Man, no no no, this will remind you of Daredevil, and Catwoman. Where, yes these are comic characters, but they are done so poorly that what was even the point? At least we got a throwback to some classic Brittany Spears.
Character development is a weak point, evident in a scene that introduces Cassie’s unexplained animosity towards her deceased mother. Sydney Sweeney’s performance stands out as a strength, but it’s not enough to redeem the movie from its inherent weaknesses.
The ending, typical of Sony’s comic book movies, leans towards a predictable and unsatisfying tease for future installments that we will never get to actually see.
I can only recommend ‘Madame Web’ for those who derive enjoyment from watching subpar superhero movies. Comparable to the guilty pleasure of CW’s ‘Batwoman,’ this film doesn’t offer much beyond a few cringe-worthy moments.

Comparison:
‘Madame Web’ ranks as one of the worst superhero movies, surpassing even the questionable ‘Morbius.’ Its target audience, primarily female comic book fans I assume, are not checking for this, considering the movie’s current box office. That leaves me to question, who was this really made for?
