Mad Max Game Lead Criticizes George Miller’s Comments on Open-World Game

The founder of Avalanche Studios, Christofer Sundberg, has strongly criticized Fury Road and Furiosa director George Miller’s comments suggesting that Hideo Kojima should create a new adaptation of the Mad Max film series. Miller had indicated that the 2015 Mad Max game, developed by Avalanche Studios, “wasn’t as good as we wanted it to be.”

Sundberg responded on Twitter, calling Miller’s statement “complete arrogance” and “complete nonsense.” He argued that Avalanche was forced to turn their open-world game concept into a more linear experience, resulting in the loss of a year’s work. Sundberg also highlighted the unfortunate release timing of Mad Max on the same day as the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, which significantly impacted its sales. Despite positive reviews from players, Warner Bros canceled planned DLC due to the game’s commercial performance.

Sundberg’s comments reflect broader frustrations in the gaming industry about creative constraints and poor release strategies imposed by publishers.
