The news that Warner Bros. Discovery has canceled plans for a Batgirl movie came as a shock to fans of the character, who have been waiting years for her to get her own film. An anonymous actor who played a minor role in the film expressed his honest thoughts on the cancellation.

He described the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO as an “imbecile.” While also saying his, “cowardice is breathtaking.”

They continued to describe the whole situation as a “nightmare” and shared that they were offended by what happened and felt terrible for directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and lead star Leslie Grace.

“I felt a considerable amount of comfort (and sincere sadness) reading your excellent article and the examination of this whole nightmare. The multiple streaming avenues and their vague guarantees appear anything but secure. I am very offended by what happened and feel terrible for the directors and Leslie Grace, who were all wonderful to work with, as well as all of the technicians. It was an enormous, rewarding challenge to make this movie during Covid, and during the cold weather in Glasgow. None of these things matter to an imbecile like [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav]. His cowardice is breathtaking. I am glad I got to participate and I wish the best for all those involved — except the suits at Warner Brothers. But they all get replaced sooner than later.”

Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah,

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are Moroccan directors, who have worked on movies like Bad Boys for Life.

The duo wanted to make a film that would be appreciated by people around the world — but it seems that Warner Bros. didn’t think the movie would sell well internationally.

Development for the movie dates back as early as 2016, when Barbara Gordan’s Batgirl was originally planned to be apart of a movie with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, that movie ended being 2020’s Birds of Prey. Batgirl was ultimately not included in the film due to the development of a solo film starring the character.

In 2017, Joss Whedon was hired write, direct, and produce a solo film, but left the project by 2018. There was some backlash with him directing a female focused film with him being a male director, but ultimately his departure occurred before most of the drama started to boil over.

In 2018, Birds of Prey writer, Christina Hodson was hired to write a script for the movie after she finished her work on another DCEU project, The Flash (2023). In 2020 the release for Batgirl was potentially teased to go straight to streaming on HBO Max, rather than in theaters, but that changed to become a feature film for the 2022/2023 DCEU release schedule.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were brought on in 2021 to direct the film, they were said to be big fans of the character and would make the film a fun ride and show a different side of Gotham from previous DC projects.

Then in 2022, following the WarnerMedia merger with Discovery and a fall in stock prices, plans changed and here we are with major cancellations.

This news comes as shock, just like 2k Games delaying Marvel’s Midnight Suns, we hope this project can resurface at some point in the future.
