Dragon Age Creator Critiques Crunch Culture in the Games Industry

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, David Gaider, the creator of Dragon Age’s setting, criticized the prevailing culture of crunch in the games industry. He expressed concern over the fear among developers that crunching is necessary to create massive games and suggested that if this were indeed the case, “maybe the industry deserves to die.”

Gaider emphasized that it doesn’t have to be this way, citing his current studio, Summerfall Studios, where employees work four days a week with a realistic schedule. He highlighted the importance of valuing employees’ well-being and ensuring they “love what they do” rather than treating them as expendable resources.

Reflecting on the turbulent state of the games industry, Gaider pointed to widespread layoffs in various studios, noting the significant impact on individuals who identify deeply with game development as more than just a job. He underscored the need for a shift away from the prevailing mindset that AAA games with massive budgets and photorealistic graphics necessitate overworking developers.

Gaider’s critique adds to the ongoing conversation about the need for healthier work practices in game development and challenges the industry to prioritize the well-being of its creators.
