Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest installment in BioWare’s beloved RPG series, will feature extensive skill trees influenced by Final Fantasy 10’s Sphere Grid and Final Fantasy 12’s License Board. In a recent interview with RPG Site, Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche revealed that these skill trees will unlock a few missions into the game.
“The skill tree is absolutely enormous and it is bespoke for your class,” Busche explained. She likened the visual representation of the skill trees to a “gigantic spider web,” with each class’s core abilities at the center and specializations on the outer edges. The design aims to be more accessible while allowing deep customization.
Busche emphasized that the organization of The Veilguard’s skill trees is similar to the Sphere Grid but not an exact match. She also cited Final Fantasy 12’s License Board as a major influence due to its flexibility in mixing and matching jobs. The level of ability selection, passives, and traits in The Veilguard mirrors the customization options seen in Final Fantasy 12.
The upcoming Dragon Age game will not follow Inquisition’s open-world structure but will instead focus on a mission-based format. This approach aims to provide “the best narrative experience” while still offering opportunities for exploration and discovering alternate paths and secrets.
Fans can look forward to a rich, customizable experience when Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases, with skill trees that offer both depth and flexibility inspired by classic RPG systems.
