Hasbro Denies Plans to Sell D&D Rights, Larian Studios and Tencent Mentioned in Reports

In recent discussions, speculations circulated about the possible sale of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) rights by Hasbro, the current owner, following reported financial setbacks. According to reports from Chinese financial news outlet Pandaily, Hasbro allegedly explored the idea of selling D&D rights and approached Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios for a potential acquisition. However, due to financial constraints, Larian reportedly directed Hasbro to Tencent.
Tencent, a major Chinese publisher with stakes in various global studios, including a 30% ownership of Larian, was named as a potential participant in these reported discussions. In response, Wizards of the Coast, the developer behind D&D, issued a statement to Dicebreaker, asserting that they have no plans to sell the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property. The statement emphasized ongoing partnerships with Tencent across multiple intellectual properties.

While corporate interests may vary between Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the developer’s statement categorically denies any intention to sell the D&D IP. Larian Studios, recognized for their work on Baldur’s Gate 3, appears to be an unconventional candidate for the ownership of D&D, given their limited direct involvement with the franchise.
