The ambitious Fallout: Nuevo Mexico mod, which captured the attention of many Fallout fans last year, has hit a major roadblock. The development team recently announced that the project is on hold as lead developer Zapshock has stepped back from the project.
A Promising Start
Fallout: Nuevo Mexico promised to bring players back to the classic RPG roots of the series with a strong emphasis on player choice and traditional RPG elements. Set just five years after the original Fallout, the mod aimed to offer a rich experience with full voice acting and an original soundtrack, drawing comparisons to other notable mods like Fallout: London.
Unexpected Silence
Earlier this year, fans noticed something was amiss when the Fallout: Nuevo Mexico YouTube channel was scrubbed of content, and most of the channels on the Discord server were erased. This sudden disappearance led to confusion and concern among the community and even the developers themselves. A voice actor for the project revealed on Reddit that they were also in the dark about the situation, saying, “Everything just sorta disappeared overnight.”
Official Announcement
After months of silence, the development team has finally addressed the situation. In a message on the Fallout: Nuevo Mexico Discord server, head of public relations JK Serling confirmed that the project is on hold and that Zapshock has stepped back from active participation. “The project has been on hold for some time, and Zapshock has decided to step back from active participation in the community,” Serling wrote. “For now, Zapshock won’t be available on Discord or any social media platforms.”
Serling will take over the responsibilities for the mod, though it remains unclear whether this means continuing development or simply handling communications. The message also indicated that should Zapshock return to modding, they will only stay in touch with close friends and developers.
Uncertain Future
The suspension of work on Fallout: Nuevo Mexico is a significant setback for fans who were eagerly anticipating its release. Despite the deep-dive videos and interviews suggesting that development was progressing well, no reasons were given for Zapshock’s withdrawal and the subsequent halt in work.
While there is hope that development might resume in the future, the complete removal of previously released materials is not a promising sign. As of now, the future of Fallout: Nuevo Mexico remains uncertain.
