Iconic slasher movie villain Jason Voorhees from the “Friday the 13th” series is slated to appear in more video games. This initiative is part of a new enterprise called Jason Universe, which aims to modernize the franchise through various projects, IGN reports. Jason Universe is run in collaboration with Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original “Friday the 13th” movie, who owns the domestic rights.
The Jason Universe Facebook page announced plans for new entertainment, games, experiences, merchandise, and more featuring Jason Voorhees. While the official Jason Universe website currently offers links to social media and a newsletter signup, it lacks specific details about upcoming projects. However, its X account (formerly Twitter) only follows Fortnite, hinting at a potential collaboration.
Historically, Jason Voorhees has been featured in numerous games, from an NES game by Acclaim to a home computer game by Domark. The 2017 asymmetrical horror game “Friday the 13th: The Game” lasted until its delisting on December 31, 2023, due to license expiration. Similarly, “Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle” was removed in January 2023 for the same reason. Jason also appeared as a DLC character in “Mortal Kombat X” alongside other movie villains.
The overall “Friday the 13th” franchise remains under Warner Bros. ownership.
