Helldivers 2 Developer Responds to Player Complaints About Underpowered Primary Weapons

Players of the cooperative shooter, Helldivers 2, have voiced dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of power in the game’s primary weapons. Despite a recent balance patch focusing on nerfing overpowered weapons, many players were hoping for buffs to their preferred weapons. In a new developer blog, Arrowhead’s Head of Product Testing, Patrik Lasota, addressed these concerns, explaining that the intentional design choice makes players feel underpowered with primary weapons unless used in conjunction with Stratagems.

Lasota acknowledged player comments regarding the perceived lack of power in primary weapons, stating, “This is very much intentional; you need to rely on your Stratagems and the Stratagems of your team to deal with all the enemies effectively.” He emphasized the need for coordination, suggesting the use of Eagle Airstrikes, Orbitals, Support Weapons, or Turrets to efficiently handle weaker enemies.

While Lasota acknowledged the importance of making primary weapons enjoyable to use, he clarified that they are meant to serve as a starting point rather than being the primary focus. He mentioned, “This doesn’t mean that your primary weapon shouldn’t feel good to use, but please understand that it is primary only in the sense that it’s something you always spawn with.”

In the same blog post, Lasota addressed the broader topic of weapons balancing, advising players to embrace nerfs instead of solely advocating for buffs to their favorite weapons. He acknowledged the sentiment of players who prefer the “Don’t Nerf, only Buff” approach but highlighted that, as a designer, it may not be the most effective strategy.

Helldivers 2, known for its cooperative gameplay, has been the subject of ongoing discussions within its player community regarding weapon balance. Lasota’s insights shed light on the intentional game design choices and encourage players to adapt to the strategies provided in the game.
