Following game designer Hideo Kojima’s recent announcement of his collaboration with Sony on an “action espionage” game, fans of the Metal Gear Solid series were quick to speculate about its potential as a “spiritual successor.”

During the State of Play event, Kojima revealed Physint, a “next-generation action espionage game” with ambitions to blur the lines between film and video games. While the collaboration with Sony and Kojima’s visionary approach generated excitement, it’s the genre itself that caught the attention of Metal Gear Solid enthusiasts.

On the Metal Gear Solid subreddit, fans expressed their hopes for Physint to carry on the legacy of Metal Gear, with many echoing similar sentiments in the thread. The enthusiasm is fueled not only by Kojima’s involvement but also by Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, revealing his longstanding encouragement for Kojima to innovate within the action espionage genre.

It’s crucial to note that Physint is an entirely new intellectual property (IP), and there’s no official connection to Metal Gear Solid. With only a working title provided, there’s no assurance that the game, upon release, will share the same vibe or gameplay as a contemporary Metal Gear Solid title. Nonetheless, the Metal Gear Solid community remains optimistic about a return to the essence of the cherished series with Kojima leading the way.

While Physint was just a snippet of Kojima’s presentation, the majority focused on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The game, featuring a talking marionette puppet and a villain wielding an electric guitar axe-gun, showcases Kojima’s distinctive creative direction and marks his reemergence in the gaming landscape.

Despite the limited details about Physint’s future, the announcement has sparked anticipation in the gaming community, particularly among Metal Gear Solid fans eager for a successor to the iconic series.
