Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is only a few days away and we are anticipating the arrival of new faces in the MCU. The younger cast of growing New Avengers contains the likes of Hawkeye’s Kate Bishop and Shang Chi from Shang- Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s Elijah Bradley, Wanda/Vison’s children Tommy & Billy, and now they will be joined by America Chavez. In the comics, America Chavez is lesbian, and this will also translate over into the MCU.
America Chavez has the power to open star shaped portals that travel through alternate dimensions, and made her first appearance in Vengeance #1 in Sept. 2011. She was created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta. We knew about her appearance in the new Doctor Strange film since December 2020, and now she is getting a bigger spotlight in the promotional marketing leading up to release.
Even though in the trailer she has few lines, her merchandise has confirmed she will retain her LGBTQ status from the comis.
Some international markets have tried to request that Disney remove a brief reference of Chavez’s two moms, but Disney has refused to remove those references. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, had supported Disney’s decision not to remove any content and has said that those countries that want the references removed are, “out of step”, with where humanity is at. These comments were also backed up by none other than Kevin Feige himself.
This Friday sees the newest member of Marvel’s Phase 4 join the MCU. Th
Marvel President, Kevin Feige said that during the creative process it was very important to be as truthful to the character of America Chavez as possible. Even though her sexulaity is important, it is also not the only thing that describes the Latin-American Superhero. She is a 14-year-old girl dealing with the trauma of being tossed around the Multiverse multiple times.
We know that Marvel is secretly building towards a Young Avenger team up movie and we can’t wait to see how all the pieces fall together.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness portals into theaters on Friday, May 6.
