Exciting news for Baldur’s Gate 3 fans: Larian Studios has announced that the game’s upcoming mod support will mark the end of its development phase, officially passing the reins to its dedicated player community.
Scheduled for release in September, Baldur’s Gate 3 patch seven will introduce comprehensive modding tools for PC users. Console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S won’t be left out—they’ll be able to download select mods created by PC users, provided these mods pass Larian’s eligibility checks.
During a recent BAFTA talk, Larian CEO Swen Vincke expressed the studio’s commitment to empowering players to create and customize their own game content. “I think that will be the point where we’re going to say, ‘Okay, now it’s yours fully,'” Vincke said.
However, the journey to develop these modding tools hasn’t been straightforward. Vincke acknowledged the challenges, noting, “It’s been hard trying to make that work.” Despite these hurdles, he confirmed that the release of these tools would indeed signify a “final handover moment” from the developers to the community.
Post-patch seven, Larian’s support for Baldur’s Gate 3 will shift primarily to addressing critical bug fixes. Vincke highlighted that the development team is “still working as if the game was just out,” but he expects the intensity of support to decrease after the patch.
Following this transition, the bulk of Larian’s team will focus on their next big projects, described as “two very ambitious RPGs.” While details are sparse, we do know that one of these projects is codenamed “Excalibur.”
In an interesting tidbit from the BAFTA talk, it was revealed that the character Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3 was initially “more sassy.” This trait was significantly toned down after one of the developers expressed a strong dislike for the character’s original persona.
Stay tuned for more updates as we watch this beloved RPG evolve through the creativity and ingenuity of its community!
