In this modern gaming climate, remakes are just as frequent as new releases and come with the added benefit of being based on an existing IP with a built in fan base. So there is no surprise when it was rumored that there could be a Max Payne 1 and 2 remake in the works from Remedy and Rockstar. Last year saw the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.Which came with a lot of hype, even if it didn’t quite live up to fan expectations.
This time around the rumor is that they will make this a full fledged AAA game on the same caliber as Control and they won’t be outsourcing the development like Rockstar did with The GTA Trilogy. Instead of using Unreal Engine 4 like The GTA Trilogy, it will be using Remedy’s proprietary Northlight engine. This should make development smoother for the studio. The two games would see their release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The first Max Payne came out all the way back in 2001 and saw its sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne released in 2003. The two games were loved both critically and commercially and even saw a film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg in 2008. The development duties then switched to Rockstar who released the moderately well received Max Payne 3 in 2012.
Remedy Entertainment recently released its long awaited Alan Wake remaster (the original game released in 2010) last year on October 5th so they are no stranger to making remakes to their beloved franchises. Their next game in active development is going to be Alan Wake 2, which will be coming sometime in 2023 for both PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
