Despite the success of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, director at FromSoftware, believes he has yet to create his “ideal fantasy RPG.” This revelation comes as the studio prepares to release the Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree.
Miyazaki’s portfolio includes genre-defining titles like Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. Each game has significantly influenced the development of action RPGs, spawning numerous ‘Soulslike’ games. Elden Ring, with its vast open world and intricate details, has sold over 25 million copies, cementing its place as a landmark in gaming.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Miyazaki reflected on his ongoing pursuit of the perfect RPG. “While Elden Ring is not quite it, it’s pretty close. It’s getting close,” he said. However, he hinted that his ultimate vision is hindered by his intimate knowledge of the game’s development. “When I play it, I know everything’s going to happen… I already know everything that’s going on,” he explained. Miyazaki expressed a desire to experience his ideal game from a player’s perspective, created by someone else.
As fans eagerly anticipate the new Elden Ring content, Miyazaki’s comments highlight the ongoing evolution and high standards at FromSoftware, leaving the gaming community wondering just how much better their games can get.
