Wonder Woman is ready for another round on the big screen.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in development — and yes, it’s already being written.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming Superman reboot, Gunn stated, “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now.” He also clarified that this new film is separate from Paradise Lost, the upcoming HBO Max prequel series focused on Themyscira.
While Diana of Themyscira remains a legendary figure in the DC Comics pantheon, her recent track record outside the page has been turbulent. The live-action franchise starring Gal Gadot started strong with the 2017 Wonder Woman film, but stumbled with its follow-up, Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel saw mixed reactions and struggled at the box office after its dual release on HBO Max and in theaters during the height of the pandemic.
Plans for a third installment in that series were eventually scrapped. Meanwhile, an anticipated Wonder Woman video game announced in 2021 was also quietly canceled, and fans are still waiting for the character to receive a dedicated animated series.
Despite the setbacks, Diana’s first solo film remains one of the DCEU’s high points — critically praised and a global box office hit, earning over $800 million. It stood out in a rocky era of DC films, connecting with audiences in a way Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad couldn’t quite manage.
Now, with Gunn and Peter Safran overseeing DC’s next chapter, excitement is building to see what a modern reimagining of Wonder Woman could look like. One major question remains: who will don the tiara and bracelets? With Gal Gadot’s return uncertain, casting speculation is sure to heat up as development progresses.
