Gaming Nintendo Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 Power Compared to Xbox Series S, Not PS4, Says Dev

As the hype builds for the Nintendo Switch 2, many fans are wondering just how powerful Nintendo’s next console really is. While we still don’t have full specs, one game developer is shedding a bit more light — and the comparison might surprise you.

In a recent interview with Wccftech, Takuto Edagawa, producer at Koei Tecmo (the team behind Wild Hearts), said that when it comes to raw computing power, the Switch 2 is actually closer to the Xbox Series S than it is to the aging PlayStation 4.

“There are a lot of characteristics when it comes to raw computing power so it’s difficult to generalize,” Edagawa said, “but I think it can be thought as closer to the Series S.”

That’s a big deal.

The Xbox Series S may be the more affordable and less powerful sibling to the Series X, but it still runs the same current-gen games — just with scaled-down visuals or lower resolutions. If the Switch 2 is in the same ballpark, it could finally open the door to stronger third-party support that the original Switch lacked.

The Switch 2 is powered by a custom Nvidia GPU with dedicated ray tracing (RT) cores and Tensor cores for DLSS AI upscaling. Nvidia previously said this chip delivers up to 10x the graphical performance of the original Switch. That’s a massive leap for Nintendo, which traditionally lags behind Microsoft and Sony in hardware specs.

It also lines up with reports that demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 are expected to land on the new system. While Black Ops 7 hasn’t been officially announced for the Switch 2, it’s launching on PS4 and Xbox One — meaning the Switch 2 should easily be able to handle it.

Another encouraging sign? Switch 2 is already breaking records, reportedly selling 3.5 million units in just four days — making it Nintendo’s fastest-selling hardware launch ever.

With hardware in Series S territory and a strong third-party launch lineup, the Switch 2 might finally give Nintendo fans the best of both worlds: beloved exclusives and access to the broader world of modern gaming.
