Tim Cain, the original lead developer of Fallout, recently shared his thoughts on the series and his reluctance to return to it in a video on his YouTube channel. Despite the renewed interest in Fallout following the success of the new show, Cain emphasized that his primary motivator for joining a project is the novelty and excitement it offers.
Cain addressed various questions from fans, including whether he would be interested in remaking Fallout as a 3D game, creating a Fallout offshoot like Fallout: New Vegas, or even developing Fallout 5. He clarified that his interest isn’t driven by authority, creative freedom, or money, but by the potential for new and different experiences.
“The ‘TLDW’ is: Every RPG I’ve ever made offered me something new and different that got me interested in making it,” Cain explained. “It was the game itself that offered me something interesting that made me go ‘Ooh, I want to do that, I’ve never done that.'”
Cain’s portfolio includes a variety of eclectic projects such as The Temple of Elemental Evil, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and The Outer Worlds. Notably, Fallout 2, the only direct sequel he worked on, was not a project he wanted to pursue, and he left its development before it was completed.
“If someone came to me and said, ‘You want to make a Fallout game?’ My answer is: ‘Well, what’s new?'” Cain said. “I didn’t even want to make Fallout 2, why would I want to make a new Fallout?”
While Cain acknowledges that financial compensation is a factor, the key driver for him is the novelty or excitement of the project. This mindset has led him to continue working on The Outer Worlds 2, overcoming his aversion to sequels.
