Ubisoft’s latest release, Skull and Bones, has undergone a significant price reduction of $25 less than three weeks after hitting the market. Despite a troubled development history, including multiple delays and a 2020 reboot, the game was officially launched on February 16 at the price of $69.99 / £69.99.
Several retailers, such as Best Buy, are currently offering the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for $44.99, and UK retailer Hit has priced them at £49.85. However, an update on March 5, 2024, indicates that the price for Skull and Bones has been raised back to its original $69.99.
In response to concerns about the $70 pricing strategy for Skull and Bones during an earnings call prior to its release, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot defended the decision, emphasizing the game’s scale and describing it as a “fully-fledged” and “quadruple-A” title that will deliver in the long run. Skull and Bones was initially planned to be Ubisoft’s first $70 game, but delays led to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora taking that position in December 2023.
It’s worth noting that despite the initial price strategy, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora also experienced significant discounts shortly after its release, falling to $49.99 / £43.85 within two weeks.
