PlayStation’s formidable leader, Jim Ryan, is embarking on a well-deserved retirement, scheduled for next March, capping an illustrious journey spanning nearly three decades with Sony.
Jim Ryan, who bears the official titles of President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, took the reins of the PlayStation division in February 2019, following his role as the head of Sony Computer Interactive Europe.
In an official statement regarding his retirement, Ryan expressed his sentiments, stating, “I’ve relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners. But I’ve found it increasingly difficult to reconcile living in Europe and working in North America.”
Ryan leaves behind a legacy of having contributed to the creation of products that have profoundly touched the lives of millions worldwide. The PlayStation brand will forever remain intertwined with his life, and he radiates optimism about the future of Sony Interactive Entertainment. He extended his gratitude to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida for the trust placed in him and for Yoshida’s sensitivity and support as a leader.
Hiroki Totoki, President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer of Sony Group Corporation, will step into the role of Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment this October to facilitate Ryan’s transition. Furthermore, starting April 1st next year, Totoki will serve as interim CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment while maintaining his existing responsibilities within Sony.
In response to Ryan’s retirement, Kenichiro Yoshida expressed his appreciation, stating, “I’m immensely grateful to Jim for all his achievements. Respecting Jim’s decision to finish his long career at Sony leaves me with an important decision regarding his succession given the significance of the Game & Network Services business.”
The new management structure is set to chart the course for Sony Group’s continued evolution and growth, with a resolute commitment to further success in the Game and Network Services Business.
