After almost two decades since the release of Spawn, fans are still waiting to see Jamie Foxx in his iconic costume. While we’ve heard rumors that it might happen in 2019, Todd McFarlane recently revealed that it will be at least 2024 before we get a new live-action adaptation of the Hellspawn. But even with that delay, we finally have some insight into what exactly would make a good reboot. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Jamie Foxx revealed that he’d like to see Spawn as an R-rated superhero movie and not just a PG-13 action movie like what’s been done before:
Spawn star Jamie Foxx has offered some more insight into the long-awaited reboot.
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is determined to bring the character to the big screen as soon as possible.
Spawn was created by Todd McFarlane in the early 1990s and centers on Al Simmons—a powerful assassin named Albert Francis Simmons before being murdered and making a deal with Hell itself to become one of its spawn (spawns are demons who were once humans). The character later becomes an antihero by becoming an agent for Heaven’s Army while still battling evil forces throughout his city.
Spawn Reboot Star Jamie Foxx Reveals Details of His Epic Superhero Suit
Jamie Foxx has seen a lot of concepts.
He’s also seen Todd McFarlane’s sketches, including an early version of Spawn’s costume that featured a cape and cowl. In fact, it was this very image that inspired Foxx to star in the upcoming reboot movie. “I saw this picture [of McFarlane] and it was so cool,” he said during his appearance at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2018 (via THR). “I thought ‘That would be dope!’ I don’t know if I could do that but it made sense because we’re dealing with superheroes now.”
Jamie Foxx has been cast as the Hellspawn since 2013.
Jamie Foxx has been cast as the Hellspawn since 2013. The actor will replace the role from Michael Jai White Spawn , which was directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and in 1997.
“I’ve seen a lot of concepts. Because Todd, what he does it, every single day he’s doodling and he’s fixing and he’s doing some things that, to me, I think is gonna be like way out when you see it. And how he crafts that cape and how that cape becomes almost like – I’ll say this – as big as the screen that you’re watching.”

- “If you look at Spawn on the cover of an issue or in a comic book or whatever it may be..it’s very stylized but there is a lot of detail in these characters…and they’re so detailed that when we went into making our suit it was all about trying to get those same details right.”
Created by Todd McFarlane in the early 90s
Todd McFarlane is a comic book artist and writer who created Spawn in 1992. He also created the character Eddie Brock, who would later become known as Venom.
Spawn was created in 1992 by Todd McFarlane, with the first issue being published by Image Comics on May 9th 1992 with cover art by Todd McFarlane. Spawn’s story revolves around Al Simmons, a man who dies after being mistaken for mafia kingpin Louis Falcone and sent to Hell by his rival gangsters. After years of torment at the hands of demons there he escapes back onto Earth where he becomes an agent for Heaven; however during this time he becomes corrupted by evil forces within himself (represented through an entity known as “The Darkness”).
The character was adapted into film once in 1997 directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé with actor Michael Jai White playing lead role.
Todd McFarlane is Determined to Bring Spawn to the Big Screen As Soon As Possible
A movie adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn has been in development for years, but it’s never seemed to get off the ground. Now, though, McFarlane is determined to bring his character — who first appeared in 1992 as a horror-comic book series — to life on screen as soon as possible.
McFarlane revealed that despite all the delays and setbacks over the years, he’s still determined to make sure that happens:
“We’ll never get to the top of the mountain if we can’t do it now, with everybody wanting to do it now. Fingers crossed. I would say it’s now or never.”
McFarlane, who created the Spawn character in 1992, said he was excited about the movie because everyone wants to make one. He also said that it will be dark and gritty like his comic series as opposed to being an animated movie with happy endings.
“Todd [McFarlane] is still alive and kicking,” Foxx said during a discussion about how he got involved with the reboot. “We’ll never get to the top of the mountain if we can’t do it now, with everybody wanting to do it now.”
Jamie Foxx’s Spawn reboot is currently in production, and it has been well over a decade since the last attempt at bringing Spawn to life. As one of the most iconic characters in comic books, Todd McFarlane has big plans for this film as he feels it’s time to bring Spawn back into the spotlight again with Jamie Foxx as an actor. The actor said that he believes “we’ll never get to the top of the mountain if we can’t do it now,” so hopefully we’ll see more news about this project soon!
