STEAM DECK 2 ON THE HORIZON, BUT DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH

Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais has shed some light on the potential release date of the highly-anticipated Steam Deck 2, and it’s not a piece of news that will have gamers jumping with excitement.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Griffais hinted that we shouldn’t expect a Steam Deck successor until at least late 2025, or possibly even later. The reason behind this extended timeline? Battery technology.

“It’s important to us that the Deck offers a fixed performance target for developers and that the message to customers is simple, where every Deck can play the same games. As such, changing the performance level is not something we are taking lightly, and we only want to do so when there is a significant enough increase to be had,” Griffais explained.

However, when it comes to the crucial factor of battery performance, Griffais expressed a more cautious outlook, stating, “I don’t anticipate such a leap to be possible in the next couple of years.”

So, while Valve may be contemplating a swifter device for 2022, it appears that the Steam Deck 2’s fate largely hinges on advancements in battery technology. Until this key component sees substantial improvements, the launch of a new Steam Deck with enhanced performance remains a distant prospect.
