Stellar Blade’s Revealing “Skin Suit” Sparks Controversy

Wear the Skin Suit will in fact raise the difficulty.

Shift Up’s upcoming game, Stellar Blade, caused a stir when a playable demo was mistakenly released on the PlayStation Store, revealing previously undisclosed details. Among them, a revealing outfit for the protagonist, Eve, titled “Skin Suit,” quickly gained attention and sparked controversy.

Shift Up has emphasized the importance of Eve’s appearance in Stellar Blade, even going so far as to 3D body-capture a real-life model to achieve the ideal physique for her. While costumes are a significant aspect of the game, with 30 promised outfits, the revealing nature of the Skin Suit has drawn particular scrutiny.

What sets the Skin Suit apart is its impact on gameplay. Contrary to earlier assumptions that outfits would be purely cosmetic, the Skin Suit will disable the player’s shield when equipped, leaving them defenseless. This mechanic introduces a challenge mode reminiscent of the “Self-destruct” command in Nier: Automata, where certain actions increase vulnerability.

While the Skin Suit may offer a gameplay advantage yet to be revealed, its introduction raises questions about the balance between fanservice and game mechanics.
