A peculiar glitch has rendered Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy unplayable on February 29, affecting players who attempted to launch the game on this particular leap year day. The issue arose as Square Enix seemingly did not account for leap years, causing the rhythm game to fail to boot up.
The problem was highlighted by a Twitter user, @Regulus_Tera, who shared their frustration after attempting to play Theatrhythm on February 29. Despite owning a physical copy of the game, the user encountered difficulties as the game connects to a Square Enix server, even with the physical copy.
In an update, the user revealed that Square Enix seemingly “y2k’d Theatrhythm,” referencing the year 2000 bug. The glitch results in the game failing to work on February 29, linked to leap years. The game will black screen indefinitely until the player changes the clock back to February 28 or any date after the 29th.
Players experiencing this issue have found a temporary solution by changing their device’s date to make the game functional. The problem appears to affect both the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions of Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line.
Notably, this glitch coincided with the release date of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth on February 29. Players were quick to share their experiences and discuss potential workarounds on social media.
Square Enix has yet to provide an official fix for the leap year-related bug. In the meantime, players are advised to adjust their device’s date settings if they wish to continue playing Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.
