Kerbal Space Program 2 Developer Closure Sparks Backlash

The reported closure of Intercept Games, the developer behind Kerbal Space Program 2, has ignited a wave of negative reviews on Steam from disappointed players. News of the closure emerged through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) indicating layoffs at Take-Two Interactive’s Seattle office, affecting approximately 70 employees at Intercept.

Although there has been no official confirmation of the closure from Take-Two or Intercept, a subsequent Bloomberg report corroborated the news, citing Intercept Games as one of the studios being shut down as part of a cost-cutting initiative by Take-Two. Despite this, Take-Two’s Private Division label, which oversees the Kerbal Space Program franchise, stated that updates to the game are still ongoing.

In response to the closure reports, the Kerbal 2 Twitter account issued a brief statement, assuring fans that development on Kerbal Space Program 2 is continuing. However, this message did little to quell the concerns of the community, as evidenced by the influx of over 250 negative reviews on Steam within 24 hours of the closure news.

While the overall impact of these negative reviews remains relatively small in comparison to the total number of user reviews for Kerbal Space Program 2, which exceeds 18,000, the sudden surge reflects the discontent among players regarding the game’s development and future prospects.

Kerbal Space Program 2 has faced criticism since its launch for its buggy state and lack of features compared to its predecessor. The closure of Intercept Games, which took over development of the game from Star Theory Games, raises further doubts about the game’s future, especially amidst Take-Two’s broader restructuring efforts and project cancellations.

The community eagerly awaits further updates on the fate of Kerbal Space Program 2, with Take-Two’s upcoming financial report and investors call scheduled for May 16 likely to provide more insight into the situation.
